Magpul is here!

Posted on

While we don’t carry everything (and we’re working on that), one particular brand that I have been forced to purchase from competitors is now available right here at Tactical Store. Magpul has arrived.

Someone out there may have just come out of a coma, is asking if Reagan is still President (sadly, no) and doesn’t know about Magpul. Magpul Industries Corporation was founded in 1999 by Richard M. Fitzpatrick. As A Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, Richard had first hand experience with what worked and what could use improving.

Magpul’s first product, introduced in 1999 was designed to assist with – well, pulling your magazine, hence the name “Magpul”. For years, soldiers have rigged tape and paracord at the base of their magazines to facilitate easy removal from a pouch or vest. Building on the success of that product, over the years Magpul has designed and released several products – followers, magazines, stocks, fore ends… even complete firearms – the Masada and Massoud, concepts such as the PDR and FMG-9 and acted as consultants for the TDI Kriss.

Magpul has some incredibly talented designers and engineers on their staff, and evidence of this is seen in their Theory …

COVRT 18 Backpack

One of the greatest benefits of working at OpticsPlanet is my hands on access to all of the products in which we carry.  This can be both wonderful and terrible at the same time.  I can see every product, evaluate the strengths and the weaknesses, and then select the best item to suit my needs.  However, conflict can arise when I find two products that I equally desire.  When I reach this road block many will say “why don’t you just get both”.  Well, that’s a nice phrase, but I am on a budget!
This happened not too long ago while I was in the search for a new backpack.  I wanted something that I could bring to work every day as well as safely carry my laptop and any other gear I might have for the day.  Durability and adaptability were also of utmost importance.  These key factors were pushing me towards a tactical backpack.  The first pack(s) I had in mind were that of the 5.11 Rush Series; Specifically the Rush 12 (also available inSandstone andMultiCam).  It was just large enough to carry 15” Macbook Pro and far exceeded my durability and adaptability

What if I attach this to this, and put this in that…

My first knife purchase here was the Victorinox Farmer Swiss Army Knife.  Come to think of it, my second and third knife purchases were the Victorinox Farmer Swiss Army Knives, as well.
I like the Farmer for a number of reasons – first, for the lack of a corkscrew.  I have never, ever needed a corkscrew when out in the woods.  Most places you are likely to encounter wine, will have corkscrews.  If I was really desperate, I would push the cork in, drink the entire bottle, and not worry about re-corking it.  Plus, I’m a bourbon guy anyway.  The bottle opener comes in handy when a Newcastle Brown Ale crosses my path, and there’s a can opener so I can be in charge of the shelter during the coming apocalypse.
The Farmer has a usable flat head screwdriver blade, and a half a phillips head, sort of.  It looks odd, but it works.  There is a reamer, so if I ever need to ream something, I suppose I’m covered there.  The best feature, in my opinion, is the wood saw.  I’ve used this to clear branches overhanging a trail, to cut a walking stick, to make shelter …

The Nitecore Tiny Monster

Posted on

Recently, I was privileged to present training for our employees on the subject of Illumination Tools.  Flashlights may not be the most exciting things to most people, but I also got to present AR-101, our class on the AR-style rifle platform, so it all works out.

Somewhere at home, I have this crappy old flashlight my Dad gave me – one of those courregated metal jobs, with the sliding switch and a folding ring at the back, and evidence of some 1960′s technology batteries.  You can probably pick your own benchmark for how far technology has advanced – medical science, the International Space Station, plasma televisions.  For me, in second place, right behind the moon landing in 1969, is this flashlight:

Almost everone said the same thing when firing this flashlight up: “Holy ****”.  I’ll give you a hint, the first asterisk represents an “s”.  This light is 135mm long, and the bezel is 60mm in diameter, so it is almost half as wide as it is tall, much like my date for junior prom was.  My prom date was cheaper to feed (the Tiny Monster uses eight CR123 cells) but between the two, the Tiny Monster is much brighter.…

Every Hunters Tactical Equipment Wish-List

Posted on

Ever wondered what to wear when you go out on a hunting trip? I definitely have. Wearing the most hidden shade of camouflage or the best-fitting apparel can make the difference between a triumphant hunt or a waste of a day. I for one would much rather go home with a successfully hunted animal in my hands than nothing but my gun. To assist in a higher rate of success, proper apparel is key.

Image of the Valley Apparel APECS Parka

For instance, the Valley Apparel APECS Parka Waterproof Jacket plays a near perfect role in any forest landscape due to the realistic colors sewn on. The jacket provides protection in cold, wet and dry weather conditions; which is optimal for any outdoorsmen because it enables him or her to hunt whenever they want. In addition, along with the durability and effectiveness included with the jacket, comfort is not forgotten, in fact the ultra-light Gore-Tex fabric allows for consistent air-circulation.

The Extraordinary S2V Military/Duty Sport Boots

Another astounding product that came to mind when I thought of hunting apparel was the Rocky Brands Men’s S2V Vented Military/Duty Sport Boots. These boots keep your feet remarkably dry by providing …

A Tactical Nightlight

In the midst of all the hype in “Sin City” lies a newly developed gun store that offers the widest variety of activities that have to do with firearms and tactical shooting. The “Shooting in the Dark” VIP package offers new adventures and scenarios through use of military tech like tactical flashlights, lasers and night vision. The heart-pounding suspense provoked by the environment and the speed in which everything happens truly provides tourists with an opportunity to feel what a soldier or professional hunter goes through at night during his or her missions.

In dark situations, night vision accessories like binoculars, night vision scopes, etc. provide a significant advantage in any scenario. For example, the Bushnell Night Vision 2.5×42 Binoculars are a very affordable, durable and exceptional piece of equipment often used by hunters who wish to look for animals at night. This binocular is equally important for military personal when they need to detect a distant target in low light conditions. The rapid movement allowed for the person using the scopes provides a very large advantage in terms of detecting any target at night. The best part about these binoculars is that they provide a clear image …

Is A New Tactical Bomber Faster Than A Bullet?!

Posted on

WOW!!! I cannot help but spread the word about this incredible unmanned-aircraft which the US Military is beginning to repeatedly test. The “DARPA Hyper-Sonic Glider,” as the US Military calls it, reached speeds of up to 13,000 mph in the sky! At that speed, the glide-bomber also reaches dangerous temperatures like 3,500 degrees Fahrenheit! That is one hot piece of metal! To put it into perspective, the same temperature is attained by NASA’s space shuttles as they re-enter the Earth’s atmosphere! The heat was so overwhelming that the metal “skin” protecting the vehicle literally peeled off the body of the plane!

Side-view of the Millett
LRS-1 Riflescope

The long-range glide-bomber immediately reminded me of the Millett 6-25x56mm LRS-1 Riflescope because of its ability to hit any target with great precision at any distance. This massively built Riflescope has a one-piece 35mm tube that perfectly fits on any heavy, hard-hitting, large caliber rifles. Also, the LRS-1 delivers superior brightness and outstanding repeatable accurateness. Many hunters and marksmen use the Riflescope world-wide due to its astonishing accurateness at distances of up to 1,000 yards. Lastly, with the help of the 140 MOA adjustment, the LRS-1 easily assists any gunmen with “zoning in …

Ready, Aim, Fire!!! Tactical Scopes used in Video Games & Real Life Combat!

Posted on

For all you Call of Duty players out there, have you ever wondered what kind of scopes the guns actually use? Well me too! The only difference is that I just found out what kind it is; in fact, it’s called the Leupold Mark 4 HAMR Rifle Scope. It’s actually pretty neat! It has a Red Dot Sight on the top for all of your close-quarters combat, but it also has an effective rifle scope for people who like to shoot from a distance.

Picture of the scope, notice the RDS on top of the scope.

The scope’s designed to provide the best resolution in mid to close-range combat due to its medium range magnification. Also, each scope is designed with withstand any kind of water entry or interior fogging, resulting in a consistently clear view. In addition, the two DiamondCoat lens coatings provide scratch-resistant exterior lens surfaces. Lastly, due to the universal reticle, almost any gun can equip the Leupold Mark 4 HAMR Rifle Scope to eliminate any opposing targets.

Just a side-note, the multi-range perk provides different distances in which the scope can view its enemies; therefore, enabling the variable zoom to come into play. The Variable …

An Extraordinary Tactical Target

Deer body along with the
tarp covered target

I recently stumbled upon an “out of this world” target. However, this isn’t your ordinary target with a bulls-eye in the middle; no it’s a target that is designed to cover 3-D figures such as a fake deer, goat or even bighorns! But I think it’s really meant for rookies like me to actually feel like I just finished a successful hunt.

For all you archers out there, get ready to tear it up!! This tarp also plays as a more “realistic” bulls eye in comparison to hunting an animal like a deer. Draw in all the “sweet spots” with something as simple as a Sharpie marker and see how consistent your shot really is!

Cover up tarp to protect targets

Some advantages of this innovative invention are that it keeps your archery targets safe from wind, rain, snow, sun and even rutting bucks(for those who don’t know what that means, Deer who looking to mate)! Also, the cover is quick to install because all you have to do is simply throw the tarp on top of the target due to its similarity to a poncho! The cords that are

Richard Hammond Uses Tactical Equipment for Destruction!

Posted on

Richard Hammond, what a guy! He immigrated from Britain to the US and recently started his own American TV show called Richard Hammond’s Crash Course, presented only on BBC America. In the show, he performs crazy stunts such as running over a car with the U.S. Army’s M1A2 main battle tank!! Yes, a tank!! That’s remarkable if you ask me.

The US Ballistic Tactical Combat Helmet

As part of the safety procedure, Hammond is required to wear military apparel that soldiers would use in real-life combat- including a helmet, military belt, boots, etc. A helmet similar to the one used on the show is the US PASGT Ballistic Tactical Combat Helmet because of its great design that delivers maximum protection, comfort, and maneuverability for any soldier. Specifically cut and shaped around the ears, the US PASGT Tactical Helmet offers optimal hearing so that drivers will not be disadvantaged in hostile engagements. This greatly benefits soldiers’ communication because being able to hear an ally may save their life one day.

Blackhawk Desert Op Boots

In addition, Hammond wore BlackHawk Warrior Wear Desert Ops Boots because they are the fastest, lightest, and most comfortable desert …
