Digital cameras and video recording systems for use in police department

In August 2006 the Atwater City Council spent $54,000 on the new video digital camera system, actually the first one in their department. The purpose of video recording is to benefit police officers and residents by giving a neutral record of conversations and behavior.
Audio and video recording can be used as evidence in court, help with internal investigations and allow sergeants to make sure officers are patrolling carefully, and are safe themselves.
Each of Atwater's nine police cruisers are equipped with two cameras and a microphone. The recording begins when the officer turns on the car's lights and sirens.
